SLI
SLI: An interface to play Stratego Legends online. SLI is just a board interface, the rules and reference cards are not included. SLI doesn't check for legal moves or actions, it is left up to the players to decide such things. This interface is not to be used in place of the board game. Its intent is to help people like myself who have a hard time finding people to play.
System Requirements
  1. Able to install and Run Java 2 JRE 1.3 (see download instructions below)

  2. 800 x 600 Screen Resolution. If you have a lower resolution everything will not fit on the srceen; and if you have a higher resolution things may be too small.

  3. Internet Connection: all communication is done through TCP/IP.
Pre Download Requirements
  1. SLI is written in Java, it's not an applet that you can run from your browser. SLI is an application which requires Sun's Java 2 JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 1.3. You can download it from their site. It's about 5 megs for the windows version, so it shouldn't take too long to download.

  2. You also need to be a member of the Trade Guild to play.

  3. Login to the ArmyList Manager using your trader guild info. Make a few armies (at least one of each side). These armies will be what SLI uses, and also will be posted on Thunder Point here for others to admire.
Download/Install/Run SLI
  1. Download sli2_2.zip (size 614K). (change file)

  2. Unzip it to c:\sli (important if you want shortcut to work).

  3. There is a shortcut in the directory (called Stratego, with a dragon's head), copy it to the desktop. Double Click on the shortcut.

  4. If the shortcut does not work. Try running it from the command line. Go to the directory where you unzipped it (ie: c:\sli) and execute the following command:

    sli

Game Flow
  1. Start the program.

  2. Select Game Manager from the File menu.

  3. Enter in Name and Password (trade guild info).

  4. This will bring you to the Create Window. Here you can create or join a game, and chat with other players.

  5. Once two people are in a game, you will be allowed to select terrain then pieces (these are menu options).

  6. After you pieces have been placed you may make two switches.

  7. The rest of the game is up to you.

  8. The game will end when someone places their castle in the dead piece area. Once this is done a dialog box will appear with two options, Play again or Leave. If both players choose play again, then the terrain and piece options will be availible again ( goto step 5 ). If one player chooses to leave then the game is discontinued and you can either exit the program or goto step 2.

Game Play
Action Panal:
  • Reveal: To reveal a piece, select it with the mouse, and click on the Reveal button. You can select multiple pieces to reveal at one time.

  • Move: To move a piece, select it with your mouse. Then select a vacant square you want to move the piece to. Once you have the two squares highlighted click on the Move button.

  • Attack: To attack a piece, first select the piece you will be attacking with followed by the piece you want to attack. Then click on the Attack button. This will move the two pieces to the Attack Squares until a winner of the attack is decided. While the pieces are in the attack squares this is the time to reveal other piece that might change the outcome of the attack ( +2 extra...). It is a point of etiquette for the loser of the attack to move his piece first.

  • Switch: At the beginning of the game you may make two switches of your own pieces. Select the two pieces you wish to switch and click the Switch button. During the game the Switch button is used to switch one of your piece with one of your opponent's pieces without revealing them. To do this, select one piece that you wish to switch and click the Switch button. As soon as both players have preformed a switch the pieces will be swapped. You can also switch two of your pieces during the game if both pieces are revealed.

  • Owner: To give ownership of one of your pieces to your opponent select it and click the Owner button. That piece is now controlled by your opponent.
Function Keys:
  • F1: Distance Strike. Select the piece you wish to strike and press F1.

  • F2: Vision. Select the piece you wish to see and press F2.

  • F3: Reveal pieces on a certain terrain type. Select the terrain type and press F3.
Chat Box/Screen:
  • Chat Box: Type messages here (black box below chat screen) to be displayed on both player's chat screen.

  • Chat Screen: Displays messages from each player and the program (gray box below gameboard).

  • Enter: The Enter key is used to send a message created in the chat box to the chat screen.

Reconnecting to a game
Notes:
  • If you or your oppenent are disconnected from the game, a message will instruct you to check your internet connection and try to reconnect.

  • To reconnect go to "Reconnect" (under file in SLI) and select it. Remember you must be connected to the internet before trying to reconnect.

  • Once reconnected, wait for the other player before moveing any pieces. If you move a piece before the other player arrives your board will differ from your oppenents.

  • You cannot reconnect to a game if your SLI has crashed.
